But the Department of Transportation is taking advantage of a loophole in the new law, which prohibits the government from spending any money to "establish" the program. The government says the new rules don't apply to the current program since it was started in September.
"The U.S. Department of Transportation will not establish any new demonstration programs with Mexico," said Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration spokeswoman Melissa Mazzella DeLaney. "The current cross-border trucking demonstration project — established in September — will continue to operate in a manner that puts safety first."
Congressional opponents of the programs insist that it's clear what lawmakers were trying to do last year when both House and Senate voted against allowing the program to go forward.
It makes my blood boil. We have no semblance of a secure border, and an utter dismissal of what the People want!

Most of you probably dont care much about Mexican truckers on the road since they wont be on your route. Those of us in south Texas are extremely scared though. The truckers already on the road here drive their truck like they are cars weaving from one lane to another, tailgating, driving in the left lane to avoid having to slow down for traffic mergin onto the freeway. Its will become even more dangerous when trucks with questionable safety standards join the mess.
When the body count predictably begins to rise the MSM and the enablers will pass it off as simple cultural differences. American motorists will die and will be ignored in the name of "Inclusiveness".
Sheesh!
4 months into the program and the body count is ZERO. The number of accidents is ZERO.
And this is not bucking the "will of the people"! Only a select few with dubious agendas.
President Bush and FMCSA are following the law! They are not establishing any new programs and they are finally living up to our part of the NAFTA agreement!
How refreshing! America finally acknowledging and complying with a promise they made!

The program is still in testing phase there are only a handfull of trucking companies that are allowed to use Mexican drivers and trucks and they still go thru a full safety inspection at the border. When the program goes into full use the Mexican trucking companies themselves will be responsible for the safety inspections AT THEIR OWN FACILITIES IN MEXICO with ABSOLUTELY NO US OVERSITE.
I live in Mexico and have been involved in the trucking industry in the US for 32 years. Because of my expertise on this subject, I have spent an hour on air with Mike McConnell, a nationally syndicated radio talk show, been featured in the November issue of OVERDRIVE magazine, and my site is used as a reference tool by various authors and writers on this subject. With that being said;
These are not companies using Mexican trucks and drivers. These are Mexican Motor Carrier, conducting business with their American customers, from shipper to consignee.
The majority of the Mexican carriers are companies hauling specialty freight for specific customers. Usually, they carry freight back to Mexico to the same customers they serviced out of Mexico.
Most people have no idea how business is conducted in Mexico. Business in general and the trucking business in particular.
Safety is standard worldwide. Enforcement standards may vary, but in Mexico, a trucker involved in an accident, which is a criminal offense in Mexico, can be incarcerated, if found to be at fault, as well as the company owners or executives. And it happens! Don't think it doesn't!
This is a huge incentive for the Mexican trucking company owners to make certain they have the best drivers and the safest equipment.
You can listen all day to the garbage being thrown around by the opponents to this program, and it is pure garbage.
And keep in mind also, all carriers from south of the border are required to enter DPS inspection stations which are at each commercial crossing and required to be open when the commercial lanes are open.
As for Mexican trucks being inspected by Mexican inspectors in the future? Mexico is a partner in the CVSA program, the same as the US and Canada. Even after this program is finished, and Mexican trucks are allowed access, they wil still be required to display a current CVSA sticker and will be subject to the same safety requirements as any other truck.
sigh........wheres the dang fence!
Don't worry Angel, soon there will be enough illegals here that they will feel crowded and start sneaking back!
You know folks, this issue has nothing to do with illegals, drugs, safety and security or any of the other excuses the critics of this program give for their opposition to.
Were the program to end today, there would still be 4.5 million trailers crossing the Texas-Mexico border annually.
Many of the trucks participating in this program would still be allowed access to our highways using the same trucks and drivers because of ties to sister companies in the United States.
Mexican trucks on US highways are nothing new. They've been here for more than 30 years, legally.
This is just a good excuse for groups and individuals to further whatever agenda they have in mind.
But I can assure you, it has nothing to do with the reasons they state
